What Are Some Top Distance Learning Schools?

It can be difficult to name the top distance learning schools, because there are currently so many good schools of different types offering distance learning programs. Duke University, for example, has a great online MBA program, and even Columbia University has a distance learning program. Some colleges offer supplemental online courses, while others are entirely online.

Here we will look at some of the top distance learning schools that have become well-known in the academic community specifically for their distance learning programs. Clearly this is not an all-inclusive list.

University of Phoenix. Since 1976, more than 400,000 graduates have come through the University of Phoenix distance learning program. It is a leading distance learning school in the United States, and offers around 100 distance learning courses at the associate's, bachelor's, master's and doctoral levels.

Kaplan University. Kaplan is a respected household name with a long academic history. It was founded in 1938 by Stanley H. Kaplan, who tutored students in the basement of his parents' Brooklyn home. Now Kaplan Higher Education is a group of institutions that offer online degree programs in criminal justice, health care, business, information technology and legal studies.

Strayer University. Strayer University has more than 75 campuses in 16 states and the District of Columbia. It specializes in higher education through distance learning for working professionals who want to advance their careers and stay in the workforce. Strayer University is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, an institutional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.
