Two Things To Know About Distance Learning UK

Education in the UK has many similarities to the American education system, and distance learning is no exception. Many of the universities and colleges in the UK offer some kind of distance learning program as do hundreds of online-only schools.

But if you are going to pursue distance learning UK programs, you should probably understand these two points:

1. The UK government has its own distance learning school. The Open University is founded and funded by the UK Government. It has an open entry policy, meaning that students can enter most undergraduate courses without having to prove previous academic achievement. Because The Open University is online, students from all over the world can take its courses. It awards undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, non-degree qualifications like diplomas and certificates, and continuing education. It is one of the world's largest universities.

2. The "ODLQC" is the main accrediting agency in the UK. The acronym ODLQC stands for Open and Distance Learning Quality Council. It began as a governmental organization, but is now independently operated, although it still receives some governmental support. The ODLQC is responsible for granting accreditation to distance education institutions. Distance learning UK programs that are accredited by the ODLQC meet high standards of administrative methods, teaching methods, educational materials and publicity. Accredited distance learning UK schools must be re-assessed at least once every three years.
