It began as a governmental organization, but is now independently operated, although it still receives some governmental support. The ODLQC is responsible for granting accreditation to distance education institutions. Distance learning UK programs that are accredited by the ODLQC meet high standards of administrative methods, teaching methods, educational materials and publicity. Accredited distance learning UK schools must be re-assessed at least once every three years.
