Time Management Tips For Students In Distance Learning Programs

Online education is the perfect solution for time-pressed parents or working professionals who want to earn a higher degree. Many students are excited about the prospect of attending courses in their pajamas, or taking an exam on their lunch break. But like traditional education, distance learning programs take time and effort, and the freedom of studying from home can sometimes throw students for a loop.

Here are some time management skills that may be helpful for students enrolled in distance learning programs:

Set a schedule and keep to it. The open format of most distance learning programs can be misleading to students who tend to take life by the seat of their pants. But "whenever I feel like it" won't earn you a degree. The best way to succeed in distance learning is to make yourself study on a regular schedule. If this means setting your alarm an hour earlier each morning to get in some class-time before work, then that's what you should do.

Don't multitask online. Studies show that multitasking is actually bad for your brain and leads to less retention of information as you grow older. Having several web browser windows open during your online classes so you can check stocks and keep up with the news will only hurt your education in the long run.

Know when to turn off the computer. As you get closer to graduating, it may be tempting to fill your free time with classes from your distance learning program. But before you sprint to the finish line, take a deep breath and remember the other things in life. Go out with your friends, play in the yard with your children, and enjoy a slow dinner with your spouse. One of the dangers of distance learning programs is that they are always there. Turn off the computer for a while -- your brain will thank you for the mental refreshment.
