Three Reasons For Distance Learning High School Programs

Distance learning isn't limited to higher education. Online high schools are becoming more popular and available. Rapidly advancing internet technologies have dramatically increased the interactivity of the virtual classroom, making distance learning high school both exciting and informative.

Most distance learning high school programs are accredited by the Distance Education Training Council (DETC), meaning that their courses meet the national education standard for high school level curriculum. Make sure to check the accreditation of a distance learning high school program before you enroll. Without proper accreditation, your high school degree may not be accepted by colleges or universities.

There are four basic types of distance learning high school programs: private (not subject to governmental funds or control), public (federally funded and therefore free for students), charter (partially funded through the government), and university-sponsored (allows high school students to earn college credit). Each type varies in reputation and cost.

Here are three reasons why many students and families are choosing distance learning high school:

1. To earn a high school diploma. Many adults who did not finish high school are choosing distance learning high school programs to earn a diploma, as an alternative to the GED.

2. To supplement home-schooling. Home-schooled students can benefit greatly from the added instruction of a distance learning high school program.

3. To catch up on credits. Students who fall behind in school because of illness or family situations can take online courses to make up for lost credits. Because distance learning courses can be completed from home, this often helps many students to graduate on time when they would otherwise have not been able to graduate.
