Recall Can Be Influenced
It is easier to recall things we have an interest in than those we don't particularly care about. Remember that you are after understanding because understanding helps you to recall the bigger picture and the main important points. Don't worry about minor details. The practice of putting things down in your own words should by now be like a neon sign blinking on and off inside your skull. By putting concepts and ideas down in your own words and looking for other ways of explaining the material, including orally to other individuals, you build understanding and reveal to yourself what you need to review. If you can find an actual use for the new material you have learned or if you can associate it with something you already know you expand your understanding and your chance of recalling it more accurately at a later time.
