That style of reading that most people normally do when they read a novel is often referred to as "pleasure reading" or "aesthetic reading." It is usually the most enjoyable style of reading, but often much less productive than other methods for researching and note taking. Becoming better at skimming and scanning will save you considerable time and effort. Recall that skimming is moving through material rapidly, looking for main points and terms. Scanning is moving through material rapidly in search of something. When scanning, you move quickly through the material, not taking the time to absorb key points and the like until you find what you are looking for and then you begin to work more closely on it. "Study reading" is often referred to as that kind of reading called for in a technical passage where terms are complex and the need to understand it results in slow methodical reading.
