Pros And Cons Of A Distance Learning Education

A distance learning education has several challenges. Let's look at three of them:

It's not for everyone. A distance learning education is not the best choice for someone who chronically procrastinates. Most successful distance learners know how to set and meet their academic goals. They are motivated. If this doesn't describe you, then you may need the structure of a traditional classroom education.

A distance learning education requires technology. Another challenge inherent to distance learning is the dependence on a computer - if you don't have access to a computer with internet access you will not be able to take courses. But not having a computer in itself shouldn't deter you completely - your local public library probably has computers with internet service that you can use during library hours.

Some programs really are too good to be true. Let's face it - some distance learning education programs are just "degree mills." They promise an easy degree, but that empty degree won't mean much on a resume. Students should be careful before enrolling in a distance learning education program - make sure the program is accredited and respected in the field.

While there are other down-sides to distance learning, the benefits often outweigh these challenges. So what are the benefits of a distance learning education?

Convenience. Taking classes from home (perhaps even in your pajamas!) can be a huge plus for the working professional or parent who wants to earn a degree. And with the rise of mobile technology like laptops and wireless internet, you can truly earn a degree from anywhere at any time.

Cost. Distance learning education is usually less expensive than traditional classes, and many colleges offer a wide array of online courses. Students also won't need to pay for travel expenses like gasoline, road tolls, parking, or bus fare.

Effectiveness. Studies show that students who take courses online perform just as well or better than students who learned the material in a traditional setting. Advanced internet technology continues to provide new and exciting interactive ways to present material, and the online distance learning education can be in many ways just as enriching as traditional education.
