Taking your career to the next level doesn't need to siphon thousands of dollars and hours of time from your budget. Earning a distance learning certificate is a good option for professionals who want greater expertise without spending three nights a week in a classroom.
Many prestigious higher education institutions offer distance learning certificate options, where students take certain courses online and complete a certification exam. Depending on the program, you can earn a distance learning certificate in a matter of months.
College certificates. If you want to earn a graduate level certificate, distance learning can help you do so. Many colleges offer distance learning certificates in education, geriatric care, forensics, pharmaceutical sciences, pest control, emergency services (fire, EMS, etc.), and sustainable construction - just to name a few. Teacher certification is a good example of this. To become a teacher in almost every state, candidates must complete an undergraduate degree program and then become certified, in addition to their degree.
Professional certificates. For many working professionals certification is a must. Not only does it look good on a resume, but certification helps employees in all fields to stay updated in the latest information. This is especially important in fields that use technology, such as the medical field. Knowing the latest technique or how to maneuver new equipment and software will help you stay relevant in the workplace. Professional certification courses do not count as college credit and therefore do not contribute toward a higher degree.
Other certificates. As internet technology becomes faster, better, and more available, new distance learning certificate programs abound. You can get a certificate for almost anything - including yoga, physical fitness, and massage therapy, just to name a few. Personal trainers, for example, need to be certified by at least one of the seven programs in the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA).
Accreditation. The key is to find a distance learning certificate program that is accredited and respected in your field. And be aware that many "certification" programs - especially those offered online and promising an easy certificate - may not be much more valuable than the paper (or email) on which they're printed. A little extra research on your part will tell you which distance learning certificate program is worth your money and effort.
