Opportunities In California Distance Learning

Home to a variety of immigrants and ethnic communities, California is a demographically diverse state, with numerous education challenges. There are about 200 different languages spoken in California, and many residents either don't know English, or speak English as a second language.

In addition to the cultural obstacles, long work hours make going to college difficult for many Californians. These challenges have increased the need for California-based distance learning programs.

In fact the need for California distance learning has been so pronounced that during the 1990's The California Department of Education sponsored something called the "California Distance Learning Project (CDLP)." While the CDLP is no longer active, the project helped to build a statewide distance learning program, increased technical assistance for distance learning, and expanded access to basic adult education services in California.

Here are some current California distance learning programs that may fit your needs:

California Coast University - a distance learning institution that has been on the forefront of distance learning since its founding in 1973. California Coast offers undergraduate degrees in business administration, management, psychology, health care administration, and criminal justice. Students may also earn graduate degrees in business administration, management, education, and psychology. It is accredited through the Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC), a nationally recognized accrediting agency.

California State University (CSU) Dominguez Hills -- the largest distance learning program in California, CSU Dominguez Hills offers 10 academic degrees and seven academic certificates through cable TV programming and the internet.

California Pacific University - offers distance learning for degrees in business and management.

UC Davis College of Engineering - offers distance learning for full-time professional engineers seeking a master's or doctorate degree.

Other California distance learning programs include UC Berkeley (offering some online courses), The College of Marin, and DiAnza College.
