Distance learning is different from traditional classroom learning in several ways. Most obviously, the student and instructor are not in the same place. So if you're having trouble in a course, you can't just grab the professor after class for a quick review.
In addition to this main difference, distance learning courses are done at your own pace and on your own schedule. Nobody will make you pay attention to the online slideshow, or show up at your door for a study group. There's just that computer on the desk in the corner.
So with these differences in mind, here are some tips for doing well in your distance learning courses:
Set a schedule for yourself. Go over your calendar and carve out some regular time each day to work on your distance learning courses. Don't pencil it in - write it in red ink, and follow through as if reporting to the boss! Committing yourself to regular study times will improve your grades and retention.
Allow plenty of time. Sometimes distance learning courses will take longer than you anticipated, either because of the material or technical difficulties. Don't plan your time so tightly that delays put you in a bind. Give yourself a cushion.
Keep your computer in good shape. All computers need regular maintenance to function well. You should have some kind of virus protection so that the latest mean computer virus doesn't take out your hard drive. Make sure you have enough working memory, and a relatively fast processing speed to handle downloads and multiple open windows. Nothing can ruin a good day faster than a computer that quits during the middle of your online exam.
Remember your dreams. Sometimes it helps to step back and remember why you want that degree, because any higher education worth its salt will have difficult moments. You may be tired at the end of a very long working day and would rather turn in early than spend another hour on the computer. If you get discouraged, post reminders of your career plans near the computer.
Appreciate the distance learning format. When the going gets tough, take advantage of the distance learning situation - give yourself a break for a relaxing bath, put on your coziest pajamas, and then log-in to your latest distance learning courses. Why not? That's the beauty of distance learning.
